Mexico, Ascension Bay
GrandSlam Fly Fishing Lodge
Fly Fishing Trip or Lodge Details:
Ascension Bay fish are your prime objective. Permit, bonefish, tarpon, snook, sports fish, barracuda and more…
Ascension Bay is world-renowned for its seemingly endless saltwater flats. Fishermen come here primarily seeking
the challenge of the elusive permit and bonefish, plus the chance to nail a Grand Slam.
You get great value out of a day of fishing here, with so many opportunities to present a fly. You’ll have
epic fights against flashes of silver. It’s a diverse fishery for experts and beginners alike.
There are plenty of fish in these waters and GrandSlam will give you the
opportunity and the insider knowledge to catch them.
THE FISHING: There are crystal clear flats with one to two feet of water that a lot of smaller bonefish call home, plus
three- to four-foot-deep flats where bigger bonefish and permit roam. There are also restricted channels for
longer fights since the fish can’t run and tire out, deep holes for lurking monsters, protected areas when the
wind kicks up, and a 70-mile reef for migrating game fish.
Rolling and gulping tarpon are easily located following their fins and
tails on their way up or down the rivers. Depending on tide conditions, moon
phases and weather, chase them along channels mouths, inner shallows in less
than 3 feet of water, or in open bays where they hide in the turtle grass
bottom or below hanging mangrove branches. It is a real challenge for fly
fishermen to direct a great cast in the middle of a creek where there is
barely room for a rod. While fishing in open bays, it is also a delightful
spot for long casting. Skillful anglers still get amazed with this specie,
which lives and rolls in very narrow channels and first time anglers get
hooked forever.
Native guides pole a vast territory searching in every spot while the
angler fishs miles and miles without seeing another boat. Opposite other
fishing locations in the Yucatan or Ascension Bay, this is primarily a
tarpon destination, being the most important nursery in Latin America. GrandSlam
is a pioneer in this area, serving the angling community for almost 3
years now, and formed by a native team of expert guides with the sharpest
eyes in the region. A strict catch and release philosophy is practiced.
Besides all the fishing experience, bird watching is another wonderful
experience where you will easily identify various birds such as pelicans,
seagull, white and roseate spoon bill, pink flamingos, white and gray herons, and
many more.
THE LODGE: With a total of 12 beautiful beachfront rooms featuring contemporary interiors, you will appreciate the air conditioning, 24-hour electricity and hot water,
and no loud generator noise at night. GrandSlam is like a boutique resort
with king-sized beds, a flat screen television with satellite service, a
DVD player, an iPod docking station for music and a stocked mini bar in each room.
The ground floor unit has two king-sized beds, an ocean-view Jacuzzi,
and a wrap-around deck with lounge chairs and a hammock. The second level bedroom
has one king-sized bed, a living area, and a balcony with a hammock. Enjoy the beautiful
sand beaches, swim in the ocean or relax at the pool!
