Blue Bayou Fishing and Charters

Fly Fishing Trip and Lodge Details:

Guatemala's Pacific coast is by far the “Sail Fish Capital of the World”, and quickly becoming the ''New Blue & Black Marlin Hot Spot'' according to Marlin magazine in 2011.

Why Guatemala? It is because of the Equatorial Counter Current. A well-defined west to east water flow that creates a type of “bill fish highway” which gathers most of the bill fish just off of Guatemala's coast. That defined current can be as far as 50 miles some days, but plan on at least a 20-mile run on average, and if you're lucky 5 mile days do occur. Blue Bayou will guarantee a bill fish catch on anyone of their 3 day charters or your next day of fishing is free!

Located in the heart of the Ancient Mayan World, the Blue Bayou Sport Fishing Lodge is nestled in Izatapa, Guatemala.

The IGFA certified Blue Bayou Charters caters to avid fly anglers for sailfish on the fly, experienced light tackle anglers for sail fish and marlin, and in shore fishing trips for roosters, jacks, and Spanish macks.

The Fishing:

Sail fish, marlins, and more!

Season information:

All year!

Fishing is outstanding all year round! 10 months of the year Blue Bayou has the best sail fish bite in the world, based on releases. While the remaining months turn into Blue and Black Marlin heaven off shore. In shore fishing in Guatemala is also top notch. When the tide is up, the red snapper and rooster fishing is second to none. The 2010 lodge record is a 52 lb. rooster, which still stands.

Marlins bite all year round as well as sails in Guatemala, but there are scheduled concentrations. Usually when the seasonal rains come in, you can expect greater Marlin numbers as the water cools to the low 82 degree range, and bait pushes in. In Guatemala the Blue and Black Marlin can range between 300 to 800 pounds, with 300 pounds being the most common. The November to December time frame offers stripe marlin on a regular basis, mixed in with the blues and blacks. All are great for the fly! Marlin can be caught year round in Guatemala but the largest concentrations seem to occur in late spring through December.

In the prime season expect to see 20 to 50 sails raised, and at least 15 to 20 sail fish released on an average day. The Pacific indo Sail Fish is known to weigh from 90 lbs. to 130 lbs. depending on time of year and sex of the fish. The pacific sailfish are very aggressive when hitting the fly (as well as teasers!).
